Top 5 Dictionary Apps for Android Phones

If you are a regular traveller or having vast friends circle from different parts of the world, you must have faced a situation where you are unable to communicate yourself to others. This is all because you are not familiar with the local language out there. What can yon do? Either learn that particular language or seek some help from technology.

It is not humanly possible to learn all the spoken languages in the world, but you can have a dictionary in your own language which will help you in this situation. Again carrying a heavy book does not seem the solution. The easiest way in today’s life is to use some dictionary apps on your smartphone. Just enter a word on your screen and know its meaning right there.

After going through many dictionary apps on Play Store, today I am here to share with you the top 5 dictionary apps for android phones. You may disagree with my listing, but it is not the final one. You may have your own.

 WordWeb

In my opinion WordWeb is the best offline dictionary app for Android phones. It offers around 300,000 words in its offline database. That means no need of data connection. It supports different languages including American, British and Asian languages. The app offers you with antonyms and synonyms of a word.

The intelligent word entry suggests possible correct spellings as you type, as well as listing words that sound the same or are often confused. Additional features include the ability to drill down on any word in a definition, full bookmark support and history.

 Ditionary.com

The Dictionary.com Android app is free and very smart. The developers claim it to be the number 1 free English dictionary app for Android since 2010. Once you download and install the app on your smartphone from Play Store, the app will prompt you to download all the necessary offline files. After doing this, you don’t need internet connection to use the app. You can access the archive to access your search history anytime.

Again it is worth mentioning that some useful features like pronunciations and synonyms are only available online.

English Urdu Dictionary

This is the most popular Urdu dictionary available on Play Store for free download. It is actually an English-Urdu dictionary app containing 117,000 words in its database. You can access the search history, add words to your favourite list and change basic settings of the app.

Once you download and install it on your Android phone, it prompts you to download necessary database for offline use, which is about 28 MB in size. And that’s all, afterwards you don’t need any data connection. One last word, the app contains ads from the developer, that may cause some nasty feeling for you.

Merriam-Webster

The Merriam-Webster is available on Play Store for free download. It is a very powerful dictionary app having voice search options. You don’t have to type a word, just speak it in your voice and the app displays its meaning for you. This feature is especially helpful when you only heard any word and you don’t know how to spell it. But remember this feature is not available offline. It means you’ll have to enable your data service prior using this option.

The app includes data files for offline access; that is why it has a large size of about 100 MB for Android version. You can take advantage of all the features, except voice search, without an internet connection. Simply download the file and install it on your Android Phone or Tablet.

Merriam-Webster also tries to teach you and help you to learn the new language by giving you synonyms and antonyms, example sentences with the words you researched, the word of the day, etc. but all this is available online only.

WordNet

WordNet is also one of the useful dictionary apps available on Play Store. The app is free to download and offers completely offline usage. It comes with a huge lexical database that is downloaded once the app is installed. The volume of downloaded database is not over 11 MB in size.

From short definitions to semantic relations between synonyms and synsets (sets of synonyms) to example phrases, WordNet can guide you through everything you need. I must say WordNet is your assistant everywhere in the world.
